![]() Damp stone is indicated with a water droplet while mining. With default settings, your game will also automatically pause so you can figure out how to deal with the problem. You’ll get an alert in the upper left, and any digging jobs that cross that damp stone will be cancelled - meaning you’ll have to re-designate those blocks for mining. While your dwarves are digging into the earth, they might encounter damp soil or stone. In this Dwarf Fortress aquifer guide, we’ll explain what aquifers are and then tell you how to deal with them. With a little knowledge and planning, building in an aquifer even has benefits - like a secure and indoor source of fresh water. The good news is that aquifers aren’t too hard to deal with, as long as you know what to do. Avoiding aquifers altogether, though, dramatically limits the available places for your fortresses. In our other guides, we told you to avoid aquifers, since flooding your fortress usually just leads to fun outcomes. I also made the mistake to play on the largest map possible. However, what is not so FUN is that now my game runs at like 30 spf (seconds per frame), because the entire water has to be calculated. Luckily, they swam ashore on the other side and now I have to dig them out (as indicated by the mining designation). This, however, immediately caused my dwarves to pump so furiously they got swept away into the water. So I built one screw pump (never knew you had to build the parts in the carpenter's workshop) and I started pumping. So I had an idea: I would play around with the screw pump in order to put mud onto the cavern floor so the fungus could get to it and I could graze my cattle and grow my plumphelmets without giant holes in between. This is my second "real" fortress attempt in the steam version. ![]() I am on a desert mountain map and my thought was: hey, let's dig down to the caverns in order to have some fungus wood and maybe a place to grow stuff.
